The Philippines are a beautiful country, known for its nature, beaches, friendly and warm people, and rich and diverse culture. Once you visit the Philippines you’ll keep coming back to it, to explore it further.
As is the case with any international trip, it’s best to make plans and schedule your trip with care. That way you can have a smooth and comfortable stay and enjoy the country as much as you can.
When to Visit?
It’s best to visit during the dry months. Avoiding harsh weather and monsoons is the only way to make sure you’re safe during your trip and to see the country at its most beautiful. The weather is mild from November to April. As is usually the case, there’s wiggle room to that.
Summers are especially hot in the Philippines and it’s best to avoid visiting during that time, especially if you have health issues to take into account.
How to Get Around?
The best way to get around the Philippines is to use your own vehicle or one that you’ve rented. In order to do so, you’ll need an international license Philippines authorities will recognize. That can be done only if you have a valid national license with you as well.
The license lasts for a year or as long as your national license is valid and it’s issued by the same authority that issues national permits. It takes about a week to obtain the document and there are no driving tests to pass.
Have Cash with You
When you arrive at the airport the first thing to do should be to exchange your national currency for a local Peso. Most businesses and venues accept debit and credit cards, however, some don’t and you don’t want to find yourself lacking cash to pay for service.
This is especially true for small bars and restaurants as well as gift shops, which are commonly visited by tourists.
Languages
There are over 180 languages spoken in the Philippines. The most commonly used ones are English, Spanish, and Filipino. The country depends on tourism and for the most part, you’ll be able to converse in English. However, some locals prefer using their own language and may try to make a point of it.
The best way to go is to learn a few useful phrases in Filipino before the trip. It should be simple enough, at least when it comes to phrases.
Local Cuisine
Local cuisine is a mixture of a variety of different influences reflecting the complicated history of the region. There are international chefs and restaurants available but you would do best to try local foods and therefore experience the local customs as they are.
The most famous local dishes are Chicken adobo, balut, and Kare Kare. Generally speaking, the dishes are slightly sweet and spicy with a garlicky feel to them. The meat is usually simmered until it’s tender and cooked in its own sauces. Don’t hesitate to try street foods as well.
