A good man means many things, from the way a man looks to the way he acts and treats other people. Traditionally, a good man worked a full-time job to provide for his family financially and was home in time for dinner every night. However, the work landscape has changed dramatically over the decades as well as the social one, as most women now also work outside of the home. In today’s world, a good man encompasses a lot of things. Here are just a few of the characteristics of a good man.
1. He treats others with respect.
A good man shows respect for others regardless of their gender, socio-economic status, religion, orientation, or other demographic features. He knows that all humans deserve to be treated as people deserving love and respect. A good man recognizes the good in others and lends a hand to those struggling to get up instead of mocking them or looking down on them.
A good man respects women in all areas and does not tolerate disrespectful speech from other men. They lead by example in how they act and speak. Showing respect to others also shows you have respect for yourself. Men who look down on others or make degrading comments about women are not good and do not possess compassion or empathy, both characteristics of a good man.
2. He knows his moral compass.
Being religious or even working among church leaders does not automatically make a man good. Reading the new King James Bible, studying with bible scholars, memorizing God’s word, and quoting verses from Exodus, Isaiah, psalms, the old testament, or the new testament does not make someone a good person.
A good man knows his moral compass and consistently acts in a way that he believes to be morally right. His moral compass applies to the way he acts publically and privately. While everyone makes mistakes, being a hypocrite is not a sign of a good man. Having a moral compass doesn’t;t necessarily mean he needs to be religious at all; religious and good are not mutually exclusive characteristics.
3. He knows who he is.
Men who are constantly chasing the version of themselves they wish they were do not know happiness. They are constantly discontent with their lives because they are constantly searching for more. The Quintessential Man is a site for men who have discovered themselves. They have their own unique style and lifestyle.
They have hobbies and interests that aren’t based on the people they are with, and they have learned to enjoy being on their own. This doesn’t mean a good man has to be single; it simply means he has learned that his happiness is not dependant on other people. Learning who you are as an individual is a lifelong journey, but one that a good man feels comfortable taking.
4. He appreciates self-care.
There are endless articles online targeted women and the importance of self-care. The advice given to women ranges from exercising, enjoying spa services, spending time with family and friends, and getting mental health help when needed. However, men need all of those things too.
For generations, men were taught that being a good man meant taking care of others first and not getting emotional. However, nothing good came from this generational curse. Men need to care for their bodies, minds, and souls just as much as women do. A man who has learned to take care of himself is a good man who is better able to care for others. A good man can get counseling when he needs it. He can get a massage, or take an extra day off for rest when he’s struggling.
